Loyola Marymount University assumed its present form when Loyola University and Marymount College merged in 1973. Loyola University was originally founded in 1911 when the Society of St. Vincent de Paul left the Los Angeles area, and the Catholic bishop asked the Jesuits to start a new university to replace the closing St. Vincent’s College. The new school was originally named Los Angeles College – a name it would keep until 1917, when the Jesuits renamed it Loyola College of Los Angeles. A graduate program was added in 1930, and the name was changed to Loyola University of Los Angeles. When LMU merged with the all-women’s Marymount College in 1973, the two names were combined into Loyola Marymount University of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles College fielded the school’s first baseball team it’s very first year of existence, taking the place of the previous St. Vincent’s College team. Records of those early seasons are incomplete, and it is possible teams were not fielded some years. In 1943, LMC joined the California Intercollegiate Baseball Association for a single year, and then returned to independent status through the 1967 season. From 1968 through 1976, they played in the West Coast Athletic Conference, then joined the Southern California Baseball Association for eight seasons. Since 1985, they have competed in the West Coast Conference.

The Lions have appeared in a single College World Series, in 1986.

The Baseball Almanac lists more than 3 dozen Lions who have made it to the Major Leagues. All-star pitcher C.J. Wilson is the most accomplished to date. Skip Schumaker, who transferred to LMU for his final season after two years at UC Santa Barbara, is now manager of the Florida Marlins.

Home games are played at Page Stadium, which was built in 1983 and seats 1,200.
