Whittier College was founded in 1887 as the Whittier Academy by Los Angeles-area members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). In 1901, it took its present name, and in the 1940s ended its official relationship with the Quaker denomination.

The Whitter Poets have competed in baseball since 1925. The school was a founding member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1915, leaving in 1943. That season, the baseball team competed in the California Intercollegiate Baseball Association. Three years later, the Poets were back in the SCIAC and have stayed ever since.

Baseball Almanac lists 10 former Poets who have played in the Major Leagues. The most accomplished is Hall of Fame pitcher Don Sutton, who won more than 300 games and struck out more than 3,000 batters in his big league career. Jim Colburn won 83 games over a 10-year career. And Hubie Brooks knocked 149 homers over a 15-year career.

Home games are played on-campus at Hugh B. Mendez Stadium, with seating for about 100.
