Point Loma Nazarene University was founded as the Pacific Bible College in Los Angeles in 1902 as a seminary for the newly created Church of the Nazarene. After a generous donation from Jackson Deets and his wife, the school was renamed the Deets Pacific Bible College in 1906. By 1910, church leaders had decided that a more comprehensive Christian liberal arts college model was preferred, and land was purchased for a new campus in Pasadena, and a new name for the new campus: Nazarene University. In 1917, it was renamed again to Pasadena University, and in 1924 to Pasadena College. When California Western University moved from its seaside campus in San Diego to a new location further north and inland in 1973, Pasadena College acquired the property and a new name: Point Loma College. A decade later, the name changed again to Point Loma Nazarene College, and in 1998 it took its present name.

As Pasadena College, the school began fielding a baseball team in 1950. In 1987, the team began playing in the NAIA Golden State Athletic Conference, and in 2013 they moved the NCAA Div. II and joined the Pacific West Conference.

The Sea Lions went to the Div. II College World Series in 2022, finishing as runner-up. In 2009, PLNU was runner up in the NAIA College World Series.

Baseball Almanac lists two alumni who have made it to the Major Leagues.

Home games are played on-campus at Carroll B. Land Stadium – widely acclaimed as the “most scenic ballpark in America.” There is permanent seating for about 300.
