California State University, Northridge was established in 1956 as a satellite campus of the Los Angeles State College (now Cal State Los Angeles), and classes were held in temporary buildings that fall. In July 1958, the campus was made independent of CSULA and was renamed San Fernando Valley State College. The state Legislature gave it its current name in June 1972.
The Matadors began playing baseball in 1959. CSUN moved to NCAA Division I in 1991. They have played in the Big West Conference since 2001.
Cal State Fullerton won the Division II College World Series in 1970 and 1984, and was runner-up in 1972 and ’90.
Baseball Almanac lists more than two dozen Matadors who have gone on to play in the Major Leagues. Among them are Adam Kennedy, who enjoyed a 14-year career (most of it with the Angels). The greatest Matador player was undoubtedly Lyman Bostock Jr., who had a .311 Major League average over four seasons before he was murdered outside Chicago following a game.
Home game are played at their on-campus stadium, Matador Field. Opened in 1961 and given several updates and renovations since, the ballpark seats more than 1,000.
