California State Polytechnic University, Pomona was originally founded in in 1938 in nearby San Dimas when the Voorhis School for Boys was donated to the state and made into the southern campus of the California Polytechnic School, located in San Luis Obispo. This southern campus, known as Cal Poly-Voorhis Unit, briefly closed in 1943 due to most of the student body joining or being called to military service. Reopening in 1946, the Cal Poly-Voorhis Unit moved to nearby Pomona in 1956 – seven years after the University of California, W.K. Kellogg Institute of Animal Husbandry was transferred to Cal Poly. After the move, the campus was renamed the Cal Poly Kellogg-Voorhis Unit.
In 1966, the two Cal Poly campuses were separated into two separate schools, with the Pomona campus named California State Polytechnic College, Kellogg-Voorhis. It adopted its current name in 1972.
The Pomona campus began competing in baseball in 1960. They were an independent for their first six seasons. In 1967, they joined the California Collegiate Athletic Association, where they have competed ever since.
The Broncos have been to four NCAA Div. II College World Series, winning three – 1976, 1980 and 1983. They were runner-up in 1985.
Baseball Almanac lists nine former Broncos who have gone on to play at the Major League level. The three most successful have been infielder-outfielder Wayne Gross, outfielder Mitchell Page and pitcher Mike Muñoz.
The Broncos play their home games in their on-campus Scolinos Field. The stadium seats 500, and is in the midst of a three-phase renovation.
