California State University, Dominguez Hills was originally proposed as a new state university in Palos Verdes in 1960, with the provisional name of South Bay State College. When land prices proved too high in Palos Verdes, the state identified a parcel near Carson in 1965. The first classes were held in a rented bank building in 1965. By 1969, the new campus was open and named California State College, Dominguez Hills. In 1978, graduate degrees were offered and the school acquired its present name.

Toro Baseball first fielded a team in 1973, and the team apparently competed as an independent until it joined the California Collegiate Athletic Association in 1981, where it has played ever since.

Cal State Dominguez Hills has yet to compete in a College World Series.

Baseball Almanac lists nine former Toros who have made it to the Major Leagues. The most notable to date are pitcher Eric Plunk, infielder Craig Grebeck, and outfielder Kevin Pillar.

CSUDH plays its home games on-campus at Toro Field, which seats 500.
