Pomona-Pitzer is the common, shared athletic program of two colleges that are part of the Claremont Colleges. Pomona College and Pitzer College began fielding a shared athletic program in 1970. Previously, Pomona College had fielded a joint team with Claremont Men’s College (later Claremont McKenna) from 1946 to 1956.
Pomona College was the first of the Claremont Colleges. Founded in 1887 by a group of Congregationlists, it was created to be a non-sectarian co-ed Christian school. The school originally held classes in Pomona, but a few years later was offered a parcel in nearby Claremont.
Pitzer College was founded in 1963 as a women’s college, also part of the Claremont Colleges. It became co-ed the same year it began fielding a joint athletics program with Pomona.
Pomona began competing in baseball in 1895. By 1913 they’d adopted the Sagehens nickname for their teams. In 1915, Pomona was one of the founding members of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They left at some point, but later returned.
Home games are played on campus at Alumni Field, which seats 500.
