The Mountain West was founded in 1998 when nine schools from the recently expanded Western Athletic Conference broke away.
San José State and Utah State joined in 2013, and Grand Canyon University joined for the 2025-2026 academic year, giving the Mountain West its current lineup.
There are 12 schools in the Mountain West, and eight field baseball teams. Only San Diego State is in Southern California. Washington State University will play baseball in the Mountain West for 2026.
Following the 2026 baseball season, Fresno State, San Diego State, San José State and Washington State will join the reconstituted Pac 12 Conference. With the loss of SDSU, SoCal Baseball will no longer follow the Mountain West for the 2026-2027 academic year unless another Southern California school joins the conference.
