The Pac-12 traces its history to the founding of the Pacific Coast Conference in 1915. After a series of cheating scandals led to the PCC being dissolved in 1959, four former member schools co-founded the Athletic Association of Western Universities. Nine years later, the conference – which by then had added four additional schools – adopted the new name of the Pacific-8 Conference, and following two more additions in 1978, the Pacific-10.
The additions of Utah and Colorado in 2011 brought the conference its current membership and shortened name of Pac-12. Both UCLA and the University of Southern California accepted bids to join the Big-10 in August of 2024, quickly joined by Oregon and Washington. Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah joined the Big 12, while Cal and Stanford joined the Atlantic Coast Conference – leaving only Oregon State and Washington State.
Washington State is competing in the Mountain West Conference in baseball for 2026, while Oregon State will play as an independent.
Following the 2026 baseball season, both Oregon State and Washington State will be joined in the reconstituted Pac-12 by current Mountain West members Fresno State, San Diego State, San José State (and non-baseball members Boise State and Utah State), as well as Gonzaga University (West Coast Conference) and Texas State (Sun Belt Conference).
