California Baptist University was founded in 1950 as California Baptist College in El Monte, Calif., by the Los Angeles Southern Baptist Association. By 1955, the school had outgrown its small quarters and moved to a larger campus in Riverside. In 1998, the school began offering graduate degrees and changed its name to California Baptist University.

For many years a baseball powerhouse in the NAIA (Golden State Athletic Conference), the Lancers moved to the NCAA Div. II in 2014, joining the Pacific West Conference. Prior to the 2019 season, Cal Baptist moved up to Div. I and joined the Western Athletic Conference.

During their two-year transition to the NCAA, the Lancers competed within the National Christian College Athletic Association, winning national NCCAA baseball titles both years (2012, 2013).

Two Lancers have made it to the Major Leagues, Tyson Miller and Trevor Oaks.

Cal Baptist has played at the on-campus Trotman Stadium since 1991. Following a 2007 renovation, it presently seats 800.
