California State University, San Marcos traces its roots to 1979 when San Diego State University opened a North County satellite campus in Vista. In 1982, the satellite campus moved a few miles east to San Marcos, and in 1989 the state legislature passed a bill making it an independent campus. The school moved to its permanent campus in 1992.

The Cal State San Marcos Cougars fielded their first intercollegiate baseball team in 2007, participating in the Los Vallecitos Boulevard in San Marcos (NAIA). The moved up to NCAA Div. II and joined the California Collegiate Athletic Association in 2016.

The Cougars have never appeared in a College World Series, and no Cougars have yet reached the Major Leagues.

Home games are played on campus at CSUSM Baseball Field, which opened in 2011, and seats a couple hundred.
