California Lutheran University was founded in 1959 by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The school’s initial name was California Lutheran College, but that was changed to the new name in 1986.

Cal Lutheran first fielded an intercollegiate baseball team in 1962, a year after the first classes were held. The school competed in the NAIA for its first three decades (including in the Golden State Athletic Conference) until moving to the NCAA Div. II in 1991, when it joined its current conference, the SCIAC.

Cal Lutheran has been to the NCAA Div. III College World Series three times, winning in 2017.

Baseball Almanac lists two former Kingsmen who have made it to the Major Leagues, including Kevin Gross who won 142 games over 15 seasons.

Home games are played on campus at Ullman Stadium. The field itself is named George “Sparky” Anderson Field after the Hall of Fame Major League manager who lived a few minutes away and became a regular in his retirement. The stadium seats just over 600.
