Vanguard University was founded by the Assemblies of God in 1920 as the Southern California Bible School. After moving to Pasadena in 1927, the school changed its name in 1939 to the Southern California Bible College. It moved again in 1950 to its present campus in Costa Mesa, and in 1959 changes its name to Southern California College. In 1999 it adopted its present name.

The Lions have competed in baseball since 1976, and have been in the Golden State Athletic Conference since 1987. The school is in the process of transferring from NAIA to NCAA Div. II and began competing in the Pacific West Conference during the 2024-25 season.

Then named Southern California College, the school made it to the 1985 NAIA College World Series.

Home games are played on campus at Dean Harvey Field.
