The West Coast Conference was founded as the California Basketball Association in 1952.
In 1959, the conference changed its name to the West Coast Athletic Conference, and in 1989 it was shorted to its present name. Seattle University (Western Athletic Conference) rejoined the conference for the 2025-2026 academic year, giving it its current lineup.
Gonzaga announced in 2024 that it would be joining the reconstituted Pac-12 Conference following the 2026 baseball season. However, the University of California San Diego will join the conference following the 2027 baseball season.
There are 10 schools in the conference, and all of them field a baseball team. Of these, three are located in Southern California: Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine and San Diego.
